Steel City Shakespeare Center will be holding open auditions for A Christmas Carol on Wednesday, September 25 from 7:30-9:00 pm at Provident Charter School, 1400 Troy Hill Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.

Rehearsals will begin in late October and will be held on weekday evenings and weekend afternoons at Provident Charter School. Performance dates are December 6-8, 13-15 with a possible special performance still to be scheduled. All actors will receive a stipend of $150.

If you are wondering what kind of people we are looking for, the answer is simple: We are looking for YOU!

With each show we seek to create an ensemble with various skills and personal attributes. We value your story and what you can bring to this story. If you want to perform, but feel you are the wrong gender, wrong age, or wrong race, we want to see you. We believe that classic literature can communicate to people of all races, ages, abilities, and economic backgrounds. We want the best performer in each track. Come on out and give it a try. You might be just what we need.

Musical and vocal talents are encouraged, but not mandatory. If you have special skills, we may be able to use them, too.

What to bring:
A copy of your headshot and resume.
A prepared song to be sung or played on an instrument or any special skills (juggling, cartwheels, great feats of strength) you wish to offer to the production.  (this is optional)
Your best self.
To request an audition slot, please send a headshot and resume to steelcityshakespeare@gmail.com.
The audition will consist of cold readings from the script.

Actors interested in auditioning but unable to attend in person are encouraged to prepare a video audition submitted no later than Thursday, September 26. Please contact us for more information on what to include in your video.

This is the fifth incarnation of a script originally conceived and adapted in 2015. The script has undergone plenty of changes, but more importantly, each cast and artistic team has put their own unique stamp on this beloved story. The script is about 95% original Dickens with much of his narration left in place. Actors will quickly shift in and out of scenes, switch characters, or step out of scenes to narrate the action. The company will consist of five actors in the following tracks:

A1: Scrooge
A2: Bob Cratchit, Marley’s Ghost, Young Scrooge, Old Joe
A3: Ghost of Christmas Past, Belle, Mrs. Cratchit, Charwoman
A4: Fred, Fezziwig, Ghost of Christmas Present, Peter Cratchit
A5: Fan, Tiny Tim, Fred’s Wife, Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come

What we are looking for:
Actors with a strong work ethic: A solid training is good, but strong desire to improve one’s craft is even better.

Actors who are independent: We will maintain open lines of communication (email, Skype, Facebook) to ensure that we can work quickly and effectively when together as a cast. We need people who will work hard to learn their roles and show up at rehearsal ready to hit the ground running.

Actors with skills: Musical instruments, singing, dancing, combat training, clowning, juggling, pantomime – you’re not required to have any of these skills, but we will make use of everything you've got.

Kind people: A strong ensemble is only successful if the individual members work well together. This is most easily achieved if the individual members of the ensemble are genuinely nice people who enjoy each other’s company. We will be spending a lot of time together as well as interacting closely with our audiences. Our company has no room for big egos who detract from the company atmosphere by serving their own interests first. This is an opportunity to improve your craft and form a sense of community with your fellow actors and audiences. Yes, we need people who are creative, energetic, and flexible, but most of all we need people who are kind.
